Visiting The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery

The spooky season is coming up, which means all things spooky and Autumn! Being so close to Sleepy Hollow, my friends and I decided to take a tiny day trip up and explore the environment that inspired The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and the Headless Horseman, written by Washington Irving.

There’s a lot of greenery, obviously, since it’s outside of the city. There’s trails, small town living, and a spooky feeling in the air. But that’s probably mostly created by the tale and people visiting.

A big chunk of our trip was dedicated to the cemetery. I didn’t realize how big this cemetery is, but it’s totally worth it to walk around explore. So many different kinds of headstones, different people, different ages, different time periods etc. It’s so interesting, and I wish I could do more research on some of the people buried here.

One well known name besides Washington Irving, was Andrew Carnegie. His burial spot is not as extravagant as I’d thought it’d be, but I’d like to think he was a modest man who had modest family putting a well thought out plot of land together.
