A Truly Nasty Entertainment List

I’ve had the word nasty on my mind a bit too much lately. Thanks, Trump!
I composed a list of things I’ve been into that could be more on the nasty side than innocent. Lots of things I’d consider goodies here!

TV SERIES

Ash VS Evil Dead
An awesome revival of the hit cult horror movie series Evil Dead. After tuning in last year to the series premiere on Halloween night, I was immediately hooked. The gore and dialogue has such a cheesy feel, but it’s more of a modern spoof on the old movie series. I recommend this so much if you don’t mind some gore and guts. Bruce Campbell is such a hunk πŸ˜› The cast is great, and Lucy Lawless is my badass homegirl. I’ve become addicted to this show.

Scream Queens
There are some people in the cast I don’t care too much for, and you can tell they were utilized to create some hype for this show. That’s how I felt before watching. It confused me how someone can create Glee one day, and American Horror Story the next. Scream Queens feels like the in between, but I think it’s safe to say Ryan Murphy knows how to make hit shows. I found myself binge watching the first season in one day, which meant I was real hooked. I liked it. The music, the fashion, the colorful scenes – it was just real appealing while touching fun horror cliches with twists and turns.

PODCASTS

My Favorite Murder
There are no words to describe how much I love this podcast. Georgia & Karen talk about true crime while throwing in daily anecdotes about their lives and how this murder podcast really makes them feel. It’s hilarious and fun and I can’t get enough of it. They just did their first NY live show yesterday and I missed out because tickets sold out immediately. I’m hoping to catch them next time around. Of all podcasts I’ve listened to, and as shared on My Thankful List, this is my number one podcast forever and always.

MUSIC

Savages
I can’t believe I’ve only heard of this band now. They’re a kick-ass all female rock group who sounds like a more frantic version of Joy Division, with hints of Echo & The Bunnymen, and Siouxsie Sioux styled vocals – but with a modern feel. Their sound fits all different moods for me making this a pretty relatable band for me to listen to. I listen to them while I’m at work; they give me all the empowerment I need to get through the work day.

True Widow
Stoner shoegaze is something I can’t quite explain to anyone, as no one seems to have any interest in listening to anything like this. True Widow‘s style hits a special place in my heart because this is my dream music. Anything somewhat related to shoegaze is right up my alley, and I instantly fall in love. They’re gritty, dark, but just a smidge angelic simultaneously. Their sound to me is literally beautiful.

The Julie Ruin
Kathleen Hanna was and still is a the most badass of them all. Period. That’s pretty much all I want to say, but it’s not fair to the rest of the band. This band is basically a happy middle between Bikini Kill and Le Tigre – you can rock out but dance at the same time, and feel connected to the words that are being yelled out to you. But once again… Kathleen Hanna is the best.

BOOKS

The Secret History Of Twin Peaks
I had bought this recently but I have yet to read it. Just like every other fan, I was super excited to hear Twin Peaks would have a revival, and it’s right around the corner! In the meantime, Mark Frost put together a book, but not a traditional novel. This book is filled with newspaper clippings and case files which are supposed to fill the blanks leading up to the new season next year. It has gotten loads of great reviews, and I can’t wait to read it. I’m not the biggest reader, so my goal is to have it all read before the new season begins. I’m sure that won’t be too much of a challenge.

The Occult, Witchcraft and Magic: An Illustrated History
It cracks me up how the one review on Amazon as of now is one star complaining of too much illustrations and not enough text. Do people not even read titles anymore? Any who, this book is on my wishlist, mostly because of the illustrations. Anything with the occult and magic really interests me, and I can’t wait to get ahold of this.

This list is basically everything that I’ve been into. And now you know what I’ve been into. “Nasty” things – a.k.a. gory, empowering, and supernatural. Not exactly on the same page as puppies and rainbows, even though puppies and rainbows are fantastic.
