These days may be looking bad, especially while the protests are still alive. But sometimes we need to shut off at the end of the day and this entertainment list has been helping me shut off until the next day in which I find myself getting up and ready to fight. ✊
⮑ Full Frontal With Samantha Bee
The first lady late night host has been on top of everything working with her diverse group of employees bringing to light issues happening in the country today. She’s covered the election and everything in between. She’s funny, and knows what’s up. Her episodes are split up all over Youtube making it easy to keep up with her and the extra web videos she posts in between episodes.
⮑ Lady Dynamite
Netflix has been on a roll lately, and this is one show worthy of binge watching. Mental illness is portrayed in so many different ways in entertainment. This show is “loosely based?” on comedian Maria Bamford’s life which was fun but frustrating but fun when Maria wraps it all around to present day where she’s okay to admit that she’s no longer in denial and is okay to work on herself while working in the entertainment industry.
⮑ Search Party
Friends in Brooklyn get swept up into this case of a missing girl whom they knew in college. Twists and turns leading them to find out what happened to her in the end and oh man, I can’t even tell you how satisfying and unsatisfying it was to find out. Sometimes mysteries are better left as mysteries.
⮑ The Killing Season
An A&E show that premiered last year originally focused on the Long Island serial killer, but branched out to unsolved murders featuring sex workers all over the country. It was interesting to see how the show developed and what they discovered in the end. I’m anxiously waiting for season two so see how it continues.
⮑ Crimetown
This new podcast has a different approach to their episodes and seasons. So far in their first season, they’re talking about the deep crime that has happened in Providence, Rhode Island a whole bunch of years ago bringing to light the corruption and whatnot that is part of the city’s history. Each episode they focus on a different story. It’ll be cool to see how the podcast progresses.
⮑ Sword & Scale
Another true crime podcast, which features super dark stories. The host goes into extensive detail which makes you wonder how he’s able to pull off these weekly podcasts with all the research and interviews he’s done. It is so worth it because you can’t help but get absorbed into this kind of documentary story telling featuring real witnesses, real recordings, real everything. Plus the music in every episode is amazing.
⮑ Goat
Not going to lie – I discovered this band while listening to the Crimetown podcast, as they’re used for the intro. This Swedish experimental band is way cool mixing psychedelic rock and afro beats, while wearing head dresses, masks, and colorful robes. They’re for sure not your average band but they’re a cool one to listen to when you feel the need to switch it up a bit.
⮑ Garbage
Our beloved 90’s band featuring Shirley Manson is back still rockin’ with songs that are just as cool as their 90’s self. They still have their original lineup, trademark sound, and cool aesthetic. If you’ve never jumped aboard the Garbage truck, now’s the time! It’s never too late.
⮑ Pins
I discovered this band just recently and they really stuck with me. They’re young, fresh, and modern. It goes to show that indie pop/rock is still alive and kicking. Maybe just reformed just a bit to fit the modern trends. Whatever it is, Pins is great.
Enjoy!
