Not too far from the city center of Rethymno in Crete is and old castle that protected the city against attacks from the water. To get to the castle was quite an uphill battle, which was the worst in the beaming sun.
It was pretty much open land with a few structures which were still mostly intact. They were probably restored as a couple of the buildings were being used as “art galleries”, or so that’s what it seemed like.
Obviously the Fortezza was right above the water. Standing at the castle, there’s a stunning view of the city underneath and a view of the water which was amazing.
It was an interesting and hot trip we took to the castle. On a hot day, it’s brutal walking outside with the sun hovering right on top of you, but it was quite a sight and experience to walk around and through the castle spaces and to see how such a space existed to protect the land.
Brutally hot is really an understatement thought. It was a neat place to check out and I recommend it to anyone who plans on visiting Rethymno, but of course I shouldn’t have to recommend plenty of water and some hats to wear. They’re absolutely necessary.
My mom snapped a picture of me with a forced smile – it was my coverup of how miserable I was walking under the scorching sun. I really can’t stress enough how hot it was.
