The Best Of The Reunited

Kat Bjelland of Babes in Toyland Fan Art

The past five years have been a big deal for older bands reuniting, and I’ve been lucky to have attended quite a number of shows I would have never imagined would happen. As a music lover, and especially a lover of the 90’s, it’s been an exciting bunch of years for my beloved 90’s bands resurrecting.

Here are some bands I’ve had the pleasure of seeing.

01. Rammstein, 2012.

This band was a common interest between me and my brother, so this show was a big deal for us. A not so little known fact – I was a huge fan of metal during my middle school and high school days. Even though Rammstein never broke up, this tour was their first U.S. tour in about ten years, so it felt as if they were broken up. Broken up from America. This show was so amazingly terrifying because they love their pyrotechnics, and I don’t. Since I made it out alive from that show, I promised my brother next time we can buy general admission instead of seats in the nosebleeds (my fire fear was real).

02. That Dog, 2012.

Jumping from metal to 90’s indie – yes I have a wide interest in music. Anyway, I got into this band mid-high school. They were kinda an obscure like for me, but I really enjoyed their music. When I heard about their reunion, I got really excited because it was so random, I had to take advantage of the fact they reunited. I remember it being middle of summer, so it was a hot show. Their music fits summer vibes so well, so it was the perfect time to see them, and they put on a memorable show. It’s been three years since then but they’re still active as they’re recording new music. I’m eager to hear it!

03. Medicine, 2013.

Seeing Medicine live was such a big deal for me. I fell in love with The Crow when I was finishing up middle school, and one thing I loved about the movie was the soundtrack. I was introduced to Medicine from this soundtrack and have been a fan since then. I never imagined them reuniting since they were an obscure band from the 90’s, but they did, and I was there. That show was a big deal because they fall into the genre I love the most, and seeing them live was euphoric.

04. Slowdive, 2014.

I think this is my favorite reunion show, and probably one of my top three favorite shows to date – also another band from my favorite genre. Shoegaze withered and died mid 90’s and although there are many modern bands that follow the shoegaze recipe, I never imagined I’d see the originals ever come together. This is my favorite shoegaze band and it was a dream to have the chance to see them.

05. Babes In Toyland, 2015.

Okay, so this one hasn’t happened yet. I’m jumping the gun. BUT, I have tickets bought all ready to go for September and I couldn’t be more happy than I am now. I was shocked to see them reunited because of the rocky terms they ended on. With all these band reunions, I’ll for sure start off the new year with a nice list of my favorite high school obsessions behind me and I am so excited I’ll have the chance to see Babes In Toyland. Between them and Slowdive, I am in heaven.

Of course I wasn’t so lucky to see reunited band I would have loved to see. I missed out on Blur, My Bloody Valentine, L7, and Jack Off Jill. Unfortunately the only band that made it clear their reunion show was a one time deal was Jack Off Jill, so I will have chances to see the other bands possibly in the future so I am not incredibly bummed.

Aside from Slowdive and Babes In Toyland, my two other dream reunions would be Catherine Wheel and Oingo Boingo. I’m crossing my fingers they will someday hop on the reunion train!

What’s your dream reunion you’d love to see happen?
