This week on Tarot To-Go we’re starting with our deep dive into the Major Arcana. What exactly is that, though? In short, they’re the twenty-two archetype cards in a traditional tarot deck. Each one is numbered from zero to twenty-one and features a portrait to explain the various stages of humanity that most of us will embody at some point in our lives.
At the end of my Full Year Birthday Reading, I pulled a Major Arcanum to represent the overall theme for the next year of my life as I make my way towards my 30th birthday next August. What card did I get? Let’s take a look.
The 19th card in the series is THE SUN. Think for a moment about the way sunshine makes you feel — warm, happy, full of life. The sun in our sky powers solar panels to create energy and feeds the plants that give us nutrition and oxygen. It heats the planet, causing weather formations that can change the face of the earth forever. Powerful, isn’t it? But there’s more to it.
Look at the imagery from the card: we have a baby holding a red flag while riding a white horse under a smiling sun. We’re talking about innocence, here. We’re talking about purity and newness in much the same way that the sun in real life can seemingly bleach the color off fabric left outside. That fresh, young child is happy and smiling, like the sun above it, as it rides fearlessly into the unknown ahead of it.
The Sun represents what’s out in the open and on the surface. There’s no denying something that’s seen in the light of day. This isn’t something you’d keep hidden — you wear it in your sleeves. It comes after The Moon card which serves as a reminder that the sun always rises again. When The Sun card shows up in a reading, it could point to happier times after a long period of darkness. It represents vitality and life. New things and fresh starts. Every day is a clean slate, isn’t it? But what about when the card pops out upside down?
A reversed Sun is a signal that maybe your inner child needs some extra care or love, like a baby dropped on its head when their horse flips over. In our day to day lives as adults, we forget about play. But all work and no play makes Vik a dull girl! Balance is key. Perhaps something that’s unavoidable in the light of day is something you’ve been ignoring like the proverbial elephant in the room? Or maybe you’re having a hard time seeing past the rough time you’ve been stuck in and have forgotten little orphan Annie’s song about tomorrow. Whatever the case, The Sun in Reverse wants you to be a little gentler with yourself as you continue your ascension through the various stages of being human.
How does The Sun card show up in your life? What brings you vitality and warmth? Let us know in the comments! Next week, we’ll have a good old fashioned tarot card reading for the collective — a nice three card spread to explain the energies of the beginning, middle, and end of the week. Sound interesting? If so, we’ll see you for next week’s Tarot To-Go on Oddball Era.
