I don’t know of any other carpet that can spark as much conversation as the Portland Airport carpet.
The iconic design has been turned into socks, shirts, mugs, phone cases, etc. Seriously, it’s such a beloved treasure among Portland people, and visitors as well. I don’t think any other airport in general gets as much attention as PDX does. Check out the hashtag #pdxcarpet in Instagram – SO many “from where I stand” inspired photos featuring the carpet. I took one myself as well (see photo above).
Being a super short-lived Portland transplant, I feel the pain of the old carpet being replaced. The new design won’t live up to the old, but we’ll all adjust in no time. I’m just happy I was able to spend some good ‘ole time with the classic. Photos are surfacing on Googling of the workers pulling the old carpet. And it’s being discussed everywhere.
I plan on visiting Portland again hopefully soon, and I won’t be opposed to taking a photo with the replacement. I’m sure we’ll all grow to appreciate it.
