(Some horror movie finger puppets my brother made which are pretty hilarious. You get a gold star if you can name these five!)
While Halloween is still kinda fresh, I still want to linger on the topic of horror movies. It’s the most appropriate time of the year to talk about horror movies and I still want to get in a few more words before we all start thinking about Thanksgiving. Cool? Cool.
Well, the past few days I’ve been watching a lot of horror flicks. After watching all the Halloweens (original 1 – 5 + remake), I thought about what I like in horror movies. I guess what draws me in is a good story line bordering thriller, twists and turns, obviously a high creep factor, and most of the time no monster-like killer. I made myself a list, and I’m gonna share it. Most of these are kinda obscure. I kinda like it like that though.
When I first saw this movie, it instantly became my favorite horror movie. This movie is not like any other horror you’ve seen; it kinda fits under horror-comedy. It’s got an interesting story line, it’s visually appealing, and it’s got a twist ending, while still categorized as a slasher film with a killer that is not like one you’ve seen before. It’s original and fun and I highly recommend this movie big big big time. Plus, I love everything all red velvet, so the title is perfect.
I spoke about the original vs remake back in May, and my conclusion was that the original trumps the remake, and really trumps all horror from the 70s. This is the best of its time and will hold up for a long time as creepy and unsettling. It’s a classic movie revolving around an evil child whom is an incarnate of Satan, which is just as uncomfortable as you think it would be. Whenever you add children into the mix, the story reaches a new level of scary.
I’m usually never a fan of movies that are based on books and video games that don’t follow the original story line. This film kinda has its own story and characters, but even with the changes, the rest of the move makes up for it. It’s downright creepy, and the monsters are freaky. The CGI was very well done. The first time I watched it, I had my eyes shut a good chunk of the time. But after the second and third viewing, I was able to watch it with no problem and I have grown to really love it. The flow into the second movie was amazing as they tied it back to the game, which was a good move if I could say.
Brittany Murphy had a knack for playing in weird movies. That’s what I loved about her – her range. I especially loved her in unsettling roles. This is my favorite movie of hers. The storyline is kinda dumb and borders corny horror-comedy, but the teen slasher aspect and twist ending were pretty great. This movie would for sure have been different if Brittany Murphy was not in it.
While we’re on the topic of corny horror released in 2000, here’s a film featuring Molly Ringwald taking place in Australia. Honestly, it’s not the best movie; it’s no Halloween or Friday the 13th, but it’s definitely pretty good for a real low budget film. It didn’t exactly follow cliches, and had a pretty creative storyline especially the history involving the killer and how he gets revived. I give them credit for pulling that off.
So here’s an amazing ghost film stuffed with an uncomfortable soundtrack, storyline, and twist ending. It’s one of those where you definitely have to watch it again because there are hints all throughout the movie that foreshadow and support the ending that really blows your mind. This story is just a mind buster that’s just so original and beautifully shot. Nicole Kidman was also fantastic.
How many movies have I listed with twist endings? I really can’t emphasize how much I love them. Here’s another one that’s all twisty and turny, and really hurt my brain trying to figure out exactly what the deal was. I had to view it a few more times to really understand, and that’s what made me love this movie. I never considered myself a Kate Hudson fan, but this was a performance I’ll never forget. This film takes place in New Orleans, and is filled with hoodoo and voodoo, which is guaranteed to be a good spookfest. The ending still freaks me out to be honest.
I don’t really know what to say about this movie except I drop everything I’m doing to watch it whenever it’s on tv. It’s eerie, the climax gets real intense, like edge of your seat intense, and the end is like holy damn whaaa. Just like that. Another ghost movie, but super minimalistic. It isn’t over the top, and leaves you holding your breath throughout the film. There aren’t many good ghost movies out there, but this one for sure holds up.
After writing up this list, now I’m thinking about how I want to give these all another viewing. They’re all just fantastic, and I think my list is pretty rockin’ if I could be honest. Everyone has their own preference of what they look for in a good horror movie, but these all fit my criteria. Watch them, you’ll see my notes are pretty accurate.
I’m finding it slowly unenjoyable watching the majority of newer horror films because they’re no longer original or unique. I’m waiting to come across a new movie that’ll give me the excitement that Red Velvet gave me, being that it’s the most recent on this list. I’m not that hard to please, but where’s the fun originality these days?
