May-keover Media // 003

Round three, my last “makeover” for the month of May, comparing and throwing in my thoughts of some movies and songs that were remade. You can check round one and two to see what other media I’ve spoken of, and I recommend you watch some if anything sparks any interest!

MOVIES

01. Bedtime Story (1964) vs Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988)
First off, this was my first time viewing either of these. I was shocked how the original had such dark humor. Maybe I have a certain view of older movies having this sort of glamour (which this one did; had plenty of 60s glamour and charm), but some of the humor threw me off and I really liked that. It was a good, clean story, but after watching the remake, I was just smiling at how much I loved it. I am definitely more in favor of the remake in this case. Steve Martin and Michael Caine were perfect in this more developed story with a twist ending. Who doesn’t love a good twisty movie? Really though, this remake has been one of my favorites during my “makeover” viewings.
My Conclusion – Original: ✘ Remake: ✔

02. The Crazies (1973) vs The Crazies (2010)
I found it interesting that both these horror movies followed the same story, but were sort of told from different perspectives. The original Crazies seemed very government based showing the military’s point of view and how they fight to control and contain the people in the town, sort of dehumanizing them. The remake focused more about the townspeople themselves and how the virus spread around town. It’s the non infected vs the infected, individualizing the people who make up the town. I appreciated the spin because they’re both fighting against the same virus but it’s different views of the battleground.
My Conclusion – Original: ✘ Remake: ✔

03. Fun with Dick and Jane (1977) vs Fun with Dick and Jane (2005)
The cast in both these movies were so good. Obviously I’m more partial to the Jim Carrey version because he’s very animated and he makes an unfortunate situation entertaining, as he seems to do with most of his movies. The original seemed to have moved at a slower pace, but everyone comes out winning in the end. They’re both lighthearted comedies, but – Jim Carrey. That’s all.
My Conclusion – Original: ✘ Remake: ✔

MUSIC

01. Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve)The Buzzcocks (1978) vs Pete Yorn (2004)
I didn’t realize how many times this Buzzcocks song has been covered. Not gonna lie, I listened to quite a few covers before settling on Pete Yorn’s version which appeared on the Shrek 2 soundtrack. It’s a really good cover compared to the other ones I checked out. I’ve been listening to the cover on repeat and it’s really growing on me, to the point that I actually may like it as much as the original. There’s a fun punk vs rock thing happening here.
My Conclusion – Original: ✔ Remake: ✔

02. Red Red WineNeil Diamond (1968) vs UB40 (1983)
After listening to UB40’s reggae version for the longest time, it’s so weird hearing the original, from Neil Diamond no less. It’s a slower song with a sad, warm feeling to it making it stand on its own, but the UB40 is just a classic. Makes it hard to even compare if I could be honest.
My Conclusion – Original: ✘ Remake: ✔

03. You Can’t Hurry LoveThe Supremes (1966) vs Phil Collins (1982)
I’ve read that Phil Collins purposely tried to mimic the classic Motown sound for his cover, which I think he did a pretty good job with after listening to original. It’s a different sound for Phil Collins to take on, but he makes it work real well. They both have a fun beat that gets me dancing in my seat, so I’m for sure loving both The Supremes and Phil Collins equally right now.
My Conclusion – Original: ✔ Remake: ✔

As I’ve stated in the other two “makeover” posts, these may or may not be on Netflix. You can figure it out in a quick search but if not, they’re for sure on the interwebs for viewing (even on Youtube which is where I watched some of these, shhh). The songs are all for sure on Youtube. So go and entertain yourselves!
