I’m Ditching My Razor

With it still feeling like a new year, it’s nice to have that feeling of starting fresh. It’s a good excuse to finally start doing something you’ve been meaning to do for a long time. I don’t really have any big resolutions this year but I have tiny ones that I want to start and follow through with.
I’ve sorta been breaking them into categories, such as health, appearance, hobbies, social, etc. One example is that I want to make a vow to never use a razor again. I guess this resolution would fit under appearance?

It could be a Tumblr thing, but I’ve been seeing a lot of girls making the decision to not shave. It’s actually a big deal, and not to get deep into the feminist aspect of it, but we’re taught in society we’ve gotta be clean shaven because it’s not feminine to be hairy, or “natural”. I find it crazy how once we hit puberty, we’re taught to regress back into prepubescent looks. I didn’t realize it was a big deal to shave my legs when I was younger, and so therefore I didn’t. I’m sure you can imagine the looks and comments I got growing up, especially during the summer. If you want to know the truth, I didn’t start shaving until freshman year of high school. I caved because I couldn’t handle the things my peers were saying.
Since then, I’ve had hair free legs and like having hair free legs, as many girls do (I give huge props to girls who live la vie naturelle). But my dilemma is that I have a hateful relationship with razors.

I’ll admit though, during colder weather and colder seasons, I get lazy with shaving. Like real lazy. But when warm weather rolls around and I am forced to wear shorts, shaving has to be a constant thing. Being that I have sensitive skin, the daily shaving never reacts well with my skin. I get razor bumps and I always find myself accidentally cutting up my legs (knees + ankles). The summer that just past was rough because of this problem I came cross with my coconut oil. I’ve been using that as my moisturizer and it seemed to have been making my razor bump scenario worse.

So with all these problems I come across with shaving, I decided to suck it up and use an epilator. I’ve waxed once before and it hurt like a mofo. I never did it again. I just really can’t handle shaving anymore, so I decided 2016 I’m finally gonna pull my hair out! -hardy har- January 2016 came and I said “ALRIGHT ALREADY”. I had a date with my epilator. I was able to cover a lot of surface area in one sitting, which did include a whole lot of whining and whimpering. Oh man did it hurt. I decided to split it into different “sessions” because it hurt so bad. Ankle to knee of my left leg one day, ankle to knee of my right leg another day, and the rest another. Besides, the device felt like it was getting overheated anyway, so we both needed breaks.

Since I’ve started, it’s been so nice feeling smooth legs for days, because when you rip the hair out of its root, it doesn’t grow back the next day just like shaving. It grows back like weeks later. I’m still in the early stages dealing with the pain but I’m looking forward to the pros that are to come.

A small list of pros to using an epilator I’ve learned:
★ They’re affordable. Some are more expensive but they essentially do the same job. No matter the cost, they’ll save you money from razors, waxing, laser treatments, or whatever else there is.
★ Your legs don’t feel stubbly when the hair grows back in just like with shaving.
★ When you pull the hair out of the root, you’re doing damage to the root. So over time, your hair will stop growing back. That’s a big deal!
★ Maybe not so much a pro in the beginning, but the more you do it, the less it’ll hurt over time. Ever noticed that after plucking your eyebrows after a long time?

I recommend you consider ditching the razor because it’ll be worth it in the long run. Here’s a helpful blog if you want to learn more. + Here’s a link to the epilator I use if you want to find a good epilator to start with.
