I want to start off by saying I’m not a hairdresser or a professional of any sort. I’m just a hair-doer and after experience and learning on my own, I have gathered tips for myself that I want to share.
01. First off, this can relate to numerous things – adjusting. If you wash your hair everyday, your body works to produce natural oils to keep up with your daily routine. If you wash every three days, your hair produces less oil. If you choose to go from daily washings to washing two times a week, your hair will adjust, although it may take some time for that adjusting. They say you’re not supposed to wash your hair everyday anyway.
02. And the reasoning is because the shampoo you use basically acts like a detergent. That’s why you get that clean feeling, because your oils were stripped. If you want to continue washing with shampoo but don’t want to constantly damage, buy shampoo that is sulfate free. Sulfate plays the role of the detergent, and is basically what creates that lather. Yes, the lather is nice, but you can live without it.
03. On the topic of washing, shampoo your scalp and condition your ends. Your ends are already dry, so no need to dry it out with shampoo. Same goes for your scalp; it’s already got oils to it, so no need to condition your scalp. Many people make this mistake.
04. Try to air-dry your hair if you can. Heat doesn’t do good for your hair. It dries, breaks, and damages your hair. And frizzes as well. Who has time for that? When you can, let it air dry. The occasional flat iron or blow drying is fine, but the daily use is damaging.
05. If you CAN’T survive without heating, buy products that heat fast and that can straighten your hair in one swipe. Going over and over the same spot is worse because that prolonged exposure is more damaging than a super high heated single swipe. You want to dry quickly.
06. Use natural oils on your ends after stressing your hair. My go to recommendation will always be straight up coconut oil. I usually do this after washing my hair. I spread the oil in my palms and scrunch and brush it into my hair. Honey is a great mask as well, but it’s a natural lightener, so if you don’t want your hair to be lightened over time, you may want to avoid that. If you want to cut out the electrical products from your daily use but have an issue with frizzing, using natural oils helps defeat that frizzing, so I really do recommend using those oils.
07. Trim your hair pretty often. It helps fight against split ends, and brings life to your hair, especially if you put extra stress on it. It could never hurt to give it a nice little trim.
08. Lastly, the habit of always touching your hair – stop. It’s hard, but you’re just spreading oils from your oily fingers, and it just makes your hair gross. Get out of that habit.
Super basic tips. I hope you learned something you already didn’t know. If not, I’ll try to step up my game for next time!
