Define Adult

The past month for me involved moving and then adjusting to a new home. My roommate and I put a little over two years at our other apartment and we took the next step into finding a new place with a friend of ours. We upgraded from two bedrooms to three bedrooms. I had it in my head that as soon as you upgrade to 3+ bedrooms, apartments automatically get much bigger.

The beginning of our search didn’t make me feel so confident about large living spaces, as the majority of our viewings were pretty small apartments. I’ll admit – I got agitated and probably unbearable to deal with. As soon as you include a third person into the mix, more compromising has to occur and I was dead set on what I wanted. Luckily in the end, we found a place we’re all happy with and we’re settled in.

Now that furniture is arranged and we’re happy with our own bedrooms, decorating the shared spaces is next on the list. There’s been slight disagreements on how to decorate because our taste is different than our new roommate. I’ve been used to living in a cramped tacky apartment for two years that talking about what we can or cannot hang bums me out.

There’s been conversation about how as we’re getting older we should consider a more “adult” looking apartment. That comment makes me question what an adult apartment looks like. Is it what Bed Bath & Beyond tries to sell us? Is it soccer mom decor? Is it fancy chinaware and high thread count bedsheets?

I don’t believe in what “adult” looks like to other people. Adult to me is making my own decisions and being able to handle myself as a functioning human being.

✿ If you can keep yourself fed and possibly know how to cook, even if it’s the basics, you’re an adult.
✿ If you can wake yourself up in the morning and get yourself dressed and to work on time, you’re an adult.
✿ If you can make smart financial decisions but not deprive yourself of a fun time, you’re an adult.
✿ If you can speak to other people in a civilized and professional manner, you’re an adult.
✿ If you can make life choices given whatever situation you’ve been put in, you’re an adult.

Bottomline: If you’re able to live life as an independent functioning human being, you’re living life as an adult. Your decor choices don’t define you. Your clothes don’t define you. Your affection towards Disney movies don’t define you.

Everyone has their own priorities, but at the same time, don’t put others down for enjoying something you don’t. Everyone has their own aesthetic, and your hobbies, passions and interests don’t take away from your ability to adult.

I guess this was mostly a letter to myself to remind me that I should let little comments other make ruin my love for a certain style or aesthetic, and I want others to be reminded of that too.
