I’m not fashion obsessive, and I never know what’s trending. I’m pretty oblivious to what’s going on in the fashion world. I honestly still wear clothes that I bought ten+ years ago. With that said, I do check out some fashion blogs time to time.
Maybe talking about style as opposed to fashion is the better term to use. I don’t think I have a specific style, and I don’t think a specific style attracts me. I pick and choose what I like which inspires me to make and customize everything I own or want to own. As long as it’s fun and comfortable, I’m happy.
I do keep an eye out for people and their style, as I get inspired pretty easily. I found that there are a few people that continuously inspire me when it comes to style, and I put together little collages of outfits I like the most to share with y’all. These people are currently my favorite sources of inspiration.
I’ve only heard of Nai Palm recently. She’s an Australian musician, and her style is on point. Everything from clashing patterns, bold colors, jewelry (her hoop earrings are crazy), and hair is perfect. I love her look altogether and love that it’s all done with long black hair and baby bangs. As I’ve discussed before, black hair and baby bangs wins me over everytime, and it’s a look I myself can’t take a break from. The way she delivers herself with her makeup and accessories just add more to the fun, unique style she has. You can tell she’s inspired by different cultures but carries herself in a way that makes her original. Aside from that, her voice and guitar skills are perfect. Check out her band Hiatus Kaiyote, it’s music you’ve probably never heard before that you should know about. I promise it won’t be what you expect.
I think out of the three musicians listed here, my style resembles Alison Mosshart’s the most, especially the button downs and animal prints. I love the way she wears her slender clothes which makes her seem even more tall, confident, and majestic. Everything she wears seems like it was decided so effortlessly with a thought process of “I’ll grab anything I see because I have to leave the house in two minutes”. Yet, she’s able to still look cool and fashionable while looking super causal to high fashion events. It’s not hard to imitate her style, but I dare you to try and look this cool. She has a way of pulling this off that I wish I was able to do. Check out Alison’s band The Kills. They’re just as cool as she is, but in music form.
Claire Boucher aka Grimes is the coolest of the cool. She’s true to her style, wearing whatever she wants and dyeing her hair whatever she wants, not following trends to appeal to the masses. Not only do I admire that, but so does everyone else. Many people jumped on the Grimes train, so I think we’re all on the same page with how we feel about her. She has no guilty pleasures and is not afraid to talk about what inspires her, ranging from anime, to Mariah Carey, to Marilyn Manson, and you can see bits and pieces of those inspirations and interests in her everyday style. You really can’t get more true than that. Listen to Grimes if you haven’t already.
Honestly, I think what attracts me most to these three is that they have or had black hair and bangs. It’s kinda silly for me to keep talking about the black hair and bangs but truth is that since that’s been my hairstyle for quite a long time, I have an easier time connecting to their style when literally starting from their head. Hair plays an important role in your overall appearance, and their styles work wonderfully with long dark hair. I always felt black hair works wonderfully with fun eccentric styles, so maybe I have a chance at looking as cool as them.
Since I love DIY more than shopping, having inspirations keeps me busy with DIY and crafts because what better way to practice the art of DIY? That’s right, on clothes. It’s the easiest way to express yourself and create your own fashion attitude. It makes me happy to have the chance everyday to personalize my wardrobe.
