Classic Souvlaki

One thing about this time difference that bothers me is that I was anxiously waiting yesterday for Pitchfork to post their latest episode of Pitchfork Classic which was about Slowdive’s Souvlaki album. Being seven hours ahead, I unfortunately was asleep when it was posted, so just know this post was intended for yesterday.

Anyway, After watching the documentary Beautiful Noise, I was a little disappointed how little Slowdive was mentioned, so I was ecstatic when Pitchfork put together this mini documentary on the band and their classic album. It touched upon the music scene at the time, what inspired the band, and their frame of mind and growth from when they started playing music up until they released Souvlaki.

I find it interesting how trends come and go, causing bands to be the thing one day, and yesterday’s news the next day. The 90’s had a wave of quick trends, especially in England. One day was punk, the next was shoegaze, and afterwards was brit pop. This unfortunately caused the demise of Slowdive since brit pop was on its way in and shoegaze was on its way out. With this constant wave of music trends, it’s fascinating to see if older albums could stand the test of time.

Even though Slowdive didn’t make it out alive during the brit pop era with Souvlaki getting bad reviews, they were given a second chance last year giving new and old fans an opportunity to see them reunited and ready to play some shows. Seeing how they’ve had full festival audiences and sold out concerts over the last year, I think it’s safe to say they’ve become even more popular than they were during their prime time, which you definitely can’t say for most bands that have reunited.
Their music has definitely been able to stand the test of time since they still sound so fresh. The 90’s may not have worked too much in their favor, but here they are with their second chance recording a new album making a lot of fans blow up with excitement (including me).

I’ve been in love with this band since high school, and being given the chance to see them reunited and play live was something I would have never imagined. They’ve held a special place in my heart, and I’m definitely excited to hear the new music they release in the future.

Slowdive Live

(Slowdive playing the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, November 5, 2014. I unfortunately didn’t stand close enough to take a decent picture. Boo.)

Here’s the Pitchfork Classic episode on Slowdive. Give it a watch.

I also find the irony of being in Greece right now, talking about one of my favorite albums called Souvlaki. Funny funny.
